Young girls learned embroidery at an early age and used their skills to express admiration for their sweethearts. Men would wear the handkerchief in public to show their commitment before leaving on sea journeys to former colonial provinces. 

Today, the craft is certified by a regional committee that evaluates the motifs, threads, size, and colors of each handkerchief.
